Is Improvisation Constraint-Based Learning?
People think improvisation is the opposite of preparation. It is not!
A jazz musician doesn't improvise because they know nothing. They improvise knowing just enough.
Improvisation happens when formal learning meets a real-world problem. An unexpected situation creates the need to act. The theory, understanding, practice and experience provide the constraints.
Apollo 13 wasn't saved by the manual. It was saved by highly trained people applying what they knew to a problem nobody had prepared them for.
Meaningful learning happens when people face uncertainty, make decisions, test ideas, and adapt.
Improvisation is the application of existing knowledge to new situations and the creation of new knowledge in the process.
Preparation matters.
But the goal is not to know all the answers.
The goal is to become good at learning as you go.
